Hatfield hmp

During the summer holidays a couple of members of the YAG Team went for a look around Hatfield HMP - an open prison. This is a Category D prison (the lowest security) and essentially the residents in here are all near enough at the end of their prison sentences. Category D prisons are a lot different to higher security prisons. We went in to experience and compare those differences and to educate ourselves of course. So first of all we went and had a look around the ‘pods’ which are a lot like a cell apart from this was equipped with a shower, as well as a toilet and bed. We then headed towards the blocks where most of the residents stay - everyone had their own room with communal showers and toilets, and a shared communal kitchen. We thought it was really nice there was a communal area with a dining table, and a pool table, so everyone could socialise if they wished to do so. Outside there was a huge football pitch which residents have access to at all times and a few spoke about how they have got a team together and designate a day out the week they can all go out and play football. Whilst looking around it said on the wall that Hatfield had the MOST prisoners employed in the UK with outside work! Which is just amazing in itself! One of our favourite parts of visiting Hatfield was the farm shop which is attached, but also open to the public. Here residents make cakes, woodwork, and many more things. We tried some cake and it was gorgeous! Such and interesting and enjoyable experience had by all! Thanks Hatfield & of course Taff for arranging it all for us!
